In recognition of her outstanding essay examining the life insurance industry’s view on genetic testing, Jennifer Jackson, a Rehabilitation Consultant at CommInsure, has been awarded the 2017 Australasian Life Underwriting and Claims Association (ALUCA) TurksLegal Scholarship.
"For three decades the same concerns have been raised on this topic and, while the science has progressed, the issues and concerns around genetics and insurance have not," Jennifer said, reflecting on why it’s important that the life insurance industry takes a closer look at the role of genetic testing, both now and in the future.
As part of this process, she believes that the life insurance industry should continue to review and reconsider insurance practices to ensure the industry builds trust, meets community expectations and keeps pace with medical advancement.
In her winning essay, the scholarship’s judging panel noted that Jennifer effectively highlighted the pros and cons of the Australian life insurance industry’s existing attitude towards genetic testing, evaluated how other comparable countries are choosing to handle this issue and provided insightful solutions to consider.
"The judges felt Jennifer's paper on the life industry’s approach to genetic testing was concise, well-researched and well-argued," said John Myatt, Lead Partner of TurksLegal’s Financial Services practice and member of the judging panel.
"Ultimately, Jennifer galvanised readers with a thoughtful argument for change and reform."
The scholarship offers life insurance professionals the opportunity to attend one of three major international life insurance conferences of their choice, while contributing to debate on cutting edge issues affecting the future of risk insurance in Australia.
"It is a privileged opportunity to share an important message with the broader industry about how rethinking insurance will improve the future of our customers and, in turn, our own," Jennifer said, after scooping the prestigious scholarship for 2017.
